Balbinot & Brommelkamp

Weekdays 4-7PM

For over two decades Brent Balbinot has been behind a microphone covering all levels of sports.  Originally from Michigan, his family moved to Fort Madison, Iowa just before he entered school.  They still reside there today.  Admittedly a slightly above average athlete (WITH A GREAT WORK ETHIC!!) Brent played basketball, baseball and tennis.  An early injury coupled with a mother who was a nurse brought a quick end to any participation in football.  As a “BloodHound” at FMHS, Brent helped pave the way for future Hawkeye men’s basketball player and NBA standout Ryan Bowen’s career by setting the bar for success incredibly low.

In the fall of his Freshman year at the University of Iowa, he quickly found a way to stay around athletics by broadcasting Hawkeye women’s basketball and baseball games on the student station KRUI.

His professional career has included calling radio play-by-play for “traditional” broadcast sports such as football, basketball and baseball, to the “unique” in wrestling, track and volleyball.  Overall Brent has broadcast various sports programming for 27 different high schools, and 2 junior colleges and the UI at 4 previous stations across eastern and north central Iowa over the last 15 years.  For the last 8 years you may have heard Brent on the Hawkeye Radio Network.  He has been the play-by-play announcer for the Hawkeye baseball team.  Over the last 7 seasons, he has also held the same position with the Hawkeye women’s basketball team.

He brings 11 years of experience covering ALL University of Iowa sports programs, a dozen area high schools and other various small colleges and local community events to the afternoons on KGYM.  From gameday coverage with the players and coaches to day-to-day athletic department operations with administrators, He will bring a unique perspective to the air.

During the off-season, he spends time working to lower his golf score or raise his batting average (both are approximately the same).

Brent and his beautiful wife Judy currently live in Coralville.

Todd Brommelkamp brings a wealth of sports knowledge, a dash of levity and a .125 career high school batting average to KGYM as the co-host of Balbinot & Brommelkamp.

A native of DeWitt, Todd studied - of all things - political science at the University of Iowa where he worked as a sportswriter for four years at the Daily Iowan and once lobbied Mary Sue Coleman (unsuccessfully) to name an ashtray in his honor. It was in college where Todd first spread his wings in the world of radio, volunteering at KRUI as a member of its sports staff before accidentally parlaying that gig into a 2-4 AM overnight shift. In his time there he did everything from hosting a classic country show to serving as Program Director, even playing a minor part in helping the station find its current on-campus home.

Since 2003, Todd has served as Editor and General Manager of Voice of the Hawkeyes magazine and VoiceoftheHawkeyes.com, a gig which opened several more doors in the radio world in the form of guest appearances on sports shows across the state and more than one free lunch. Thankfully, one of those doors led to KGYM – and a few more free lunches.

Todd's radio resume also includes a brief stint with the Cedar Rapids Kernels, where he occasionally shared the airwaves with the legendary John Rodgers and, from time to time, local schoolchildren.

When he's not watching the Kernels and Cubs or busy closing out his bar tab somewhere, Todd enjoys talking to fans about the Hawks and meeting the station's many listeners.

Balbinot & Brommelkamp Call Screener and power forward Jo Hamlin grew up in the middle of nowhere in southern Kansas, very close to Oklahoma, and does occasionally still show a little of her southern accent. Jo went to high school in Winfield, Kansas, home of the Vikings, and was a 3 sport athlete in high school, playing golf, basketball, and track.

Her first year in college she attended K-State to play basketball, then transferred to the University of Iowa to finish her career. Jo graduated in December 2009 with a degree in Health and Sports Studies and a minor in Communication Studies, which makes her perfect for the Balbinot and Brommelkamp show, where they not only need help to broadcast, but have also been known to pull a hammy every now and again.

After college she spent 7 months in Switzerland playing professional basketball for the team out of Luzern, learning to yodel, and stocking up on fine cheeses and Toblerone chocolate.  Jo has done interviews and color commentary for Iowa women's ball games and is excited to start a new and exciting chapter in life!
